Totaranui Road is the link between Takaka and Totaranui, the northern gateway to the Abel Tasman National Park. The gravel road is hilly, narrow and winding, and leads to a very popular holiday destination Totaranui Camping Ground and Visitors Centre. There is a wonderful diversity of plants on the bush-clad hills leading over to the coast. I was inspired to paint ‘Afternoon Light’ after travelling to Totaranui during a fine, misty summer rain. I have tried to capture the play of light filtering through forest leaves, tree ferns and nikaus along the road edge. The curving road is a metaphor of life, where you are not quite sure what you might find around the corner.
